Michael Lerner
Michael Lerner (June 22, 1941 – April 8, 2023) was an American character actor from Brooklyn, New York, known for playing loud, powerful and often comic authority figures.
His best-known role was the bombastic studio boss Jack Lipnick in the Coen brothers' Barton Fink (1991), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Lerner played gangster Arnold Rothstein in Eight Men Out (1988), the crooked club owner Bugsy Calhoune in Harlem Nights (1989) and the publishing executive Fulton Greenway in the Christmas comedy Elf (2003). He also appeared in Godzilla (1998) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).
Alongside his film work he made dozens of guest appearances on American television over a career of more than fifty years.
Lerner died on April 8, 2023, at the age of 81. His death was announced by his nephew, actor Sam Lerner.
